Women Veterans Picnic on the Patio
Canton, OH, June 9th, 2013: There will be a free Women Veterans Picnic on the Patio for all women veterans throughout northeast Ohio and their families on Sunday, June 9th at the 356th Fighter Group in Canton, OH. This event scheduled from 11am to 2pm offers women veterans and their families an opportunity to come together, share experiences, build a network of resources and learn about veteran services and veteran service organizations available to women.
North Coast WAVES Unit 21 and the 356th Fighter Group are co-sponsoring the event. There will be free food, generously provide by the 356th, which will include a picnic type menu. During the picnic, other activities will be available for veterans and family members. We will also have a Chinese auction, including tickets to sporting events and other items to raise funds for the WAVES unit to help with programs that focus on caring for the needs of our state’s female veterans.
Natalie Sprouse is scheduled to entertain the troops. She is an amazing contemporary and diverse musical talent. She was the 2011 winner of the "DeYor Singing Star Competition” sponsored by Powers Auditorium in Youngstown. Recently, Natalie played at the “Remembering Melvin Wine Benefit” in Sutton, WV featuring bluegrass players nationwide. Melvin Wine was a bluegrass hall of fame member and grandfather to Natalie Sprouse. Natalie's musical inspirations are: Carole King, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Eva Cassidy, Alison Krauss, Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, and James Taylor. She may be young, but she is an “old soul” musically.
Any female veterans or active duty are encouraged to attend with their families. It is expected to be a day of fun and camaraderie. We hope to make this an annual event. The reason for the location is because the North Coast WAVES has membership from Cleveland to Youngstown, to Columbus and we find that the Akron-Canton area is centrally located to women veterans in northeast Ohio.
